    Abstract :

Electronic waste is the end of life remnant ofelectronic devices and is increasing at amuch higher rate than all other wastestreams. Due to the fast-growing electronicsindustries arising from the demands ofinformation and communication technologiesaround the world coupled with the rapidproduct obsolescence and lack of end-of-lifemanagement options, have all led to theunsustainable management of the wastestream. Electronic devices such ascomputers are manufactured from over 1,000materials, many of which are toxic, and theycontribute significantly to the e-waste stream, which is estimated to be approximately 20 to50 million tonnes annually. Government ofIndia has taken substantial measures to curbe-waste by the adoption of e-wasteManagement and Handling rules 2011.Amongst the various initiatives worldwide, design for environment cleaner production, extended producer responsibility, standardsand labelling, product stewardship, recyclingand remanufacturing are some of thepractices adopted by various countriesaround the world to deal with the e-wastestream. The paper attempts to review thesepractices as well look into the manner inwhich they contribute to the sustainablemanagement of e-waste.
